Our Story

Art from the Source

QALAA was built on the belief that the most important art in India is being made in villages, not galleries.

There is an extraordinary paradox at the heart of Indian art. In the villages of Rajasthan, Odisha, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Kerala, hereditary craftspeople practice traditions that are thousands of years old — devotional, technically extraordinary, and deeply rooted in place and community.

And yet, for the buyers who might love this art most — discerning collectors, luxury hotels, architects and interior designers who understand craft — these traditions are nearly inaccessible. There is no platform that takes them seriously. No infrastructure that connects artisan to buyer at the level of quality, provenance, and narrative these works deserve.

QALAA was founded to change that. We go to the source. We visit villages, build relationships with hereditary artisans and their families, document traditions, and bring these works to the buyers who will value them as they should be valued.

Our name — QALAA — derives from the Arabic root for "fortress" and "citadel," words that spoke to the architectural and artistic heritage of the communities we work with. It is also the word for "art" in several South Asian languages. A fitting double meaning for what we are building.

What We Stand For

🤝
Direct Relationships

We don't buy through middlemen. Every work on QALAA comes directly from the artisan. They receive fair compensation, and we know the story behind every piece.

📜
Provenance First

Every work is documented — artisan biography, tradition context, materials, and creation date. We believe buyers deserve to know exactly what they're acquiring.

🌱
Living Traditions

We work exclusively with living artisans practicing traditions that have continuity. We do not trade in antiques or historical pieces separated from their communities.

⚖️
Fair Economics

Artisans receive the majority of every sale price. We operate on transparent margins and share pricing breakdowns with artisans. Their economic security enables the tradition to survive.
